Few days back i received this touching mail. Wanted to share it with all of you.

Dear mr. Das,

the most incredible thing has happened to me over the past couple of weeks and as a result, a small Caravan Hound entered my life. When you realize that I live in the Netherlands, Europe, you might appreciate the strangeness of the events and all the coincidences and synchronicity leading to this result. It is a long story and a rather sad story as well, but one with a happy ending after all.

Some time ago a friend of mine was alerted to an advert for a Caravan Hound on a Dutch internet marketplace. She's the head of a small organization which rescues sighthounds, and even though she had never heard of a Caravan Hound before, she saw that it was a kind of sighthound from the picture attached to the advert and contacted the owners. The owners agreed to let her place the Karwani bitch in a good home and signed her over to my friend. My friend soon found a woman in Germany who was willing to give this exotic hound a new home and they agreed to meet each other half way.

To everybody’s horror, the little female escaped in a parking lot for trucks, in Germany, and they were unable to catch her. She was in unfamiliar surroundings, with unfamiliar people and no one could catch her. She wandered about for 12 days, and during those12 days, the little Caravan Hound had managed to climb a 6 feet tall fence, outrun two police cars chasing her and escape from all sorts of other attempts made by the people in the towns were she was sighted, to capture her. The police even had to block the highway for a short while, because she was seen wandering there too. The woman who was willing to give her a new home, began to have serious doubts and decided it would not be a good idea if she were to come and live with her. My friend of course told me about the nightmare with the Caravan Hound in Germany, and I went over to help her find this strange hound. I had heard of Caravan Hounds before, being a lover of oriental sighthounds myself, but apart from the name I knew nothing at all about this breed, let alone having ever met one in person.

So I "googled" Caravan Hound and came across your wonderful and very informative blog. You obviously love these hounds very much and it really touches my heart to read your stories and watch the beautiful photographs you post there. However, I don't know how I came across this posting, but suddenly I found myself reading about Indy, Cash's granddaughter, going to Holland. There were two adorable pictures of her as a 5 months old pup. There was no doubt about it: this was the very Caravan Hound we were trying to capture in Germany! I send the link to your blog to my friend so she could read it for herself.

Early morning last Sunday, on Pentecost, she was finally caught in a trap, with food inside, they had set up for her. Since I have a completely enclosed garden, (also on top) and am experienced with oriental sighthounds and traumatized hounds, I offered my friend to let her stay with me to recover from her ordeal.

Late afternoon that Sunday Indy arrived in our home. This was the first time I saw her, and I fell in love right away. She is such a special creature, so different again from my two Sloughia's and Galgo mix from Spain. Despite her ordeal, the weightloss, the scars and numerous ticks on her body (71 in total), she was so graceful, I could not help myself but let her into my heart and soul. Indy, as she was called, looks so happy and healthy in those pictures on your blog in july 2008, that it brings tears to my eyes when I look at them again right now, and then at the skinny, scared and traumatized creature lying on a dogbed in my living room.

I felt that Indy should have a new name, to mark a new beginning in her life so I renamed her Sunanda. She has been through enough in her short life. I just wanted to let you know that the beautiful little pup you put on your website is finally safe.

I also made a little blog for her with small stories of how she is doing now, but it is in German, to make it easier for all the German people who helped searching and finally trapping her, to follow. However, the pictures of course speak a thousand words.

In my short experience with the Karwani pashmi so far i can say that i have been amused,exasperated,annoyed and overjoyed! and sometimes all in the course of the same day! Karmic is stubborn,high energy,vocal and very bright.He loves company whether its human or of his own kind and has an obsession with sitting on any high perch from where he can get a good view even if it means climbing up on the cars roof!!

I think this breed is suited for those people who can give them lots of love and exercise and also a fair dose of firm but kind discipline.In the right home they will be a joy to own and as they bond closely with their owners they are protective of them and thus make effective watch dogs.I absolutely adore these beautiful hounds and am enjoying my experience with my pup.

Well these are my thoughts so far about my doggy and the breed in general!

KCI/FCI/Gurgaon Dog Show 08

Prasad drove down from Mumbai with Cash and Fizza. So, i had no other way but to land for the show with Moon and Ozaan the next morning. There was a decent crowd, inclusive of around 300 dogs, if am not wrong.

Both Ozaan and Moon were a bit nervous. This was the first time they were in the middle of something like this. The two days were fun for us but a bit taxing for the dogs, specially for Caravans as they aren't too fond of crowds.

Cash, as always won 3-4 Best in Breed and Fizza also a few trophies. Moon completed three CCs, thus becoming a champion. Ozaan we are not sure, till the results come by post. But, think he also completed his quota of three CCs.

Overall it was a good first time experience, but money spoke and in Nagaraj Shetty & Dorraiswami's tune. I came face to face with the murky underbelly of dog shows in India. Where, if you have the money, you can import dogs, bribe the KCI secretary and take home the awards. Whispers of arrest warrant against the KCI secretary were doing the rounds as he was nowhere to be seen when he was supposed to be judging. Ring stewards were prompting judges as to how to go about their business. So, much so for a first time was really gripping and absorbing. Surely, more than a Bollywood pot boiler.

Keeah; the king or protector in Persian, arrived on the 2nd. He is the only full brindle pup from Cash & Rani's last litter. So, was Parsha, my first Karwan. I mean from Cash & Rani's earlier litter. So, couldn't resist the temptation of expanding the family yet again.

Though now, Keeah is spending quality time sleeping and getting used to the chill, he is quite naughty and just wants to play or throw pranks around whenever he is awake. Yesterday, he was lying in my lap when Ozaan walked up to stake his claim by my side and he growled taking Ozaan by surprise. Certainly this tiny brindle bundle packs a punch.

This would be Cash & Rani's last litter(combination). Both have produced excellent pups till date. My first Karwani, Parsha was from their previous litter.
And, i can just close my eyes and vouch for their confirmation & gait. Infact, had it not been for Parsha, i would have never been drawn to this breed...maybe.

Om, Ozaan & Moon

Last week my sister was over with my nephew Om from Bangalore. Om's about to turn two. Though he has met Ozaan twice & Moon once, I think he was too young to remember them. This time around he seemed a bit uncomfortable with five dogs around him at the beginning. And, this seemed to perplex Ozaan a bit. He would go upto Om from time to time and try to be friends with him.

By the second day Om was showing his drawing to Moon, waking her up from her sleep and was jumping around with Ozaan. Asking for him when he was not to be seen around. To cut a long story short, Om was in his elements.

Here are some photographs i managed to click on the third day. These images are for all those people who keep asking me from time to time how Karwanis are with children. And, specially for some experts who have always maintained that Karwanis are not safe with children. Hope you all enjoy this visual testimony of a Karwani's temperament.

Prasad Raghu Mayekar : The lone crusader

Prasad Raghu Mayekar, in other words, the Godfather of Caravan Hounds or Karwanis. Though he doesn't prefer being called by the latter name, Prasad, stands tall as a lone crusader.
For 26 long years he has nurtured over 16 generations of Karwanis. Not just that, also bred innumerable show winners & champions. Not to forget, his rare distinction of breeding 'DOG OF THE YEAR BEST BRED IN INDIA' for the very first time(Indian Breed).
At the age of 13 he had his first brush with Karwanis and since then his passion has done the talking. A pioneer in saving the breed from disappearing over the oblivion, no amount of words or praise does justice to what this incredibly magnanimous & passionate personality has laid down for the future generations. Hats off to you Prasad!

In memory of Parsha(For those who can't make out : The poetry is in bangla or bengali; the title is : 'let my soul soar'(transliteration is : let a bit remain, let my heart & spirit soar) the poetry talks about our(Parsha & mine) conversations. Which we mostly used to have, just looking into each other's eyes.
It talks about instances when his looks would be naughty, loving, caring and at times commanding. It also talks of a host of other emmotions & feelings as well. But above all one particular look/expression, which i have come to understand now(after he has passed away), is that of a plea, when he'd be scolded upon a mischief(which on lot of occassions would be just running away, chasing birds and not coming home when Zuzu(my Labrador) & Sultan(my Rottweiler) would be back), which seemed to say "thaak na ektu, uruk na praanta...aamar kaache toh besi din aar nayee(let a bit remain, let my heart & spirit soar because i don't have too much time) ".

Caravan going places!

Yet another feather in the cap. Both for Prasad Mayekar and the Karwani, as a breed.
After Canada, now a 5 month old Caravan Hound, named Indy(Cash's grand-daughter), goes to Holland. The first Karwani to go outside India was Neil Trilokekar's beautiful bitch Rukmani ,again from Karbens, Prasad's kennel, way back in 2004.

With fingers crossed, i sincerely hope the big bosses(AKC) are taking notice. Because, until & unless American Kennel Council(AKC) recognises the Karwani as a breed, they stand on grounds of obscurity(on the world stage) except for Holland, Canada and their motherland, India. What an irony! What a pity!

Our 1st exploration.

Saturday, we went exploring the vast green and apparently hidden expanses, nestled partly in Delhi and partly in Gurgaon.

Needless to say, we all(Moon, Ozaan, Zuzu & me along with a few ring-side seat warmers) had a ball. Chasing cranes and just running around in open greens.

Moon & Ozaan just let themselves loose and took to the fields with gay abandon. While Zuzu(my Labrador), most probably got a hang of what we were there for and was occupied sniffing around with serious intent. The clouds would peep in and out from time to time, though never playing a spoilt sport even for a moment.

In all, it was absolutely great for a first time experience. Thanks to Vijayji for his warmth and hospitality, not to miss, of course the nimbu-paani.

The next trip promises to be more fun, according to Vijayji, as some scouting veterans are going to join us. Think, we all are looking forward to it, me in particular.

A Caravan finds home.

I walked into our new apartment eagerly anticipating a rambunctious little furball. What i found instead was a scrawny little puppy with the biggest saddest eyes u ever saw! My heart dropped at the possibility that this shy creature would probably never appeal to the rest of the coven.

Prachita and i had little idea of just how tumultuous our caravan ride would be. Before we knew it our life became a blur of pedigree pellets, soiled newspapers, vet visits, puppy obsessed conversations and fervent google searches. Our social life was the household joke. But neither the extensive responsibility nor the critical disapproval fazed our avid dog lover spirit. We rarely saw anything beyond our baby girl anymore.

Unfortunately a heartless landlord and an aggressive confrontation later we were forced to face the music we had shied away from hearing for so long. Cookie would have to leave. But where? Who would have place for our beloved 2 month old caravan who was only just recovering from her life? Our frantic search led us to Debashish, a hopeless dog lover and caravan hound enthusiast. A few brief but heartfelt discussions later we came to a conclusion, cookie's new family would be Mr Sharma. So cookie and i set off to Gurgaon to meet her new parents. Despite my paranoia, all our love and care was only too evident in her confidence and enthusiasm when she met Debashish and his beautiful children. Everything went perfect and cookie settled in beautifully.

Retracing my steps alone was too heartbreaking to elaborate. I could barely remember a time without her. She'd filled every crevice in our lives with her uninhibited love. I wanted to turn back and get her. I wanted her to say she'd never forget and always miss us. I wanted to scream at her for being so ok when i felt shattered. I did none of these things. I guess life always works out after all. But i know i'm speaking for Prachi and myself when i say that those tiny paw prints have been tattooed on our hearts for good.

A 27yr old dream

Am thrilled. Excited. Overwhelmed and a bit saddened at the same breath.
Day before, when Prasad shared the news, his attempts to hold back the excitement fell apart...the peeping palpability in his voice gave it away.
Cash was declared DOG OF THE YEAR BEST BRED IN INDIA 2007/2008. CH.KARBEN'S SUGAR, by the KCI.
A first of firsts. Because, no Indian breed has ever done this. A first for Cash as well, who could easily pass of as a veteran at winning shows, not to forget, a first and a dream come true for Prasad, who has made a habit out of nurturing and breeding show winning Karwanis for sometime now.
Finally, realisation of a dream, Prasad has lived for 27 years now. Over 16 generations of Karwanis, since he had his first Karwani as a 13 year old.
I think, i know how he must be feeling, just from the fact that i feel lucky, proud and humbled having Ozaan(Cash's son from Mindy) in my life.

But today as i said, it saddens me to realise that it has taken us or the KCI, so many years to recognise a true beauty of nature.
And also, thinking that it takes dogs shows to wake some of us up to this mesmerising and free spirited animal.

Karwani

The Karwani or Caravan Hounds ( as anglicised during Colonial rule) are found in the Marathwada region, encapsulating parts of the states of Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh in India….their history dates back to the BCs...they are graceful hunters, known as a noble breed always ready to sacrifice food, life, etc.
......they are aristocratic, intelligent, proud, silent, elegant with powerful but graceful movement.....their coat is very tight, short, shiny and fine...their muscles are flat but very well outlined, almost as if chiseled..… colours range from white, off-white, cream, fawn black, brindle, grey; and permutation-combination of almost all with or without patches or spots..........they are very affectionate, extremely sensitive and strongly attached to their families.........their beauty is something special, asthetic, ethereal..….....they have extremely expressive eyes which is capable of giving a cold stare, if need be ........and their face is gentle but can become ferocious if real danger is near........a true blooded warrior, the Karwani does not like to fight but will do if he or his family is attacked......and when he does you might just end up watching it's true samurai spirit in awe........ the Caravan is very patient & tolerant with children but reserved towards strangers......she ideally would like to take her time to be friends with you if you are not her immediate family.......she does not like to be dirty, she would religiously spend some good time licking and cleaning herself up.........because of her composed behavior, can be kept in an apartment, provided she gets her share of exercise........a true beauty of its own kind it is said that… You don't own your Caravan! He or She owns you!

A perfect harmony

Is it harmony? Is it symphony? Or, is it simply harmonious symphony? The way they move seems like a well rehearsed play or a perfect duet sung by Lata & Kishore. Every time I see them, I am smitten by each and every move of theirs. The way they sit, the way they move, the way they look at you and even the way they sleep. It is simply magical.

I am very grateful to the supreme power that governs this world, that I am blessed with such lovely beauties. I have become so attached to them that I just can't imagine my life without them. I don't know how I lived all this while when they were not there.

Sometimes it seems as if I have given birth to them. It may sound crazy to most people, but I really feel that way. Sometimes I even wonder whether a real human kid will be so loving to me or vice versa. Will I ever be able to love my real kid more?....and I never have the answer.

On my way to the airport I kept fiddling with the music volume all the way just to ease my nerves…Nusrat’s magic melted my nerves and somewhat eased the longing to witness that ethereal sighthound gait, first hand…

…..a dream, I’d been living with... for the past 8-10 months, since I'd started digging on sighthounds. Pharaohs to Borzois, to Salukis and standing dumbstruck facing a beauty called Sloughi, not to forget getting glued to all that was available about the legendary Azawakh and craving for more....everything was fine and rosy till my talks with a couple of Swedish & French Sloughi & Azawakh breeders neared the last chapter and the colour of money they quoted for a pup, blew me pale...…anyways, that’s a story for another day……

…..dejected, drained for the next few weeks…I just kept reading more about them and the sighthound family as well, and as luck would have it….i stumbled upon a posting on Caravan Hounds by a Canadian of Indian origin called Neel.....little did i know what was about to unfold in our own backyard....his posting led me to Prasad ....we talked over weekends....after a while, weekdays as well....and after 2-3 months of conversations, mails & photographs and a promise of an exceptional pup(inspite of a tinge of apprehension, about what was in store, clinging somewhere), here I was, driving my way to the airport about to pick up my first Karwani.

As I got over with the paperwork and moved towards the hanger, located the cage with my name and address on it I saw my two and a half month old new member of the family. Picking up the cage I started walking....... i hadn’t even caught a proper glimpse of him, yet fell in love with what couldn't possibly be missed…his beautiful golden brindle colour....thinking to myself, that Prasad had kept part of his promise….now remained the other part..the gait.

‘arre sher ka baccha hai’ …’abe nahin pilla hai, yaar’ a conversation walked past me as i moved through the cargo alley, back to the car. Settling the cage on the rear seat carefully, I fed him a biscuit and that was when our eyes met…it was like, an intense, soulful glare taking you in........ i fell in love with him the second time.

Reaching home, he took very naturally to both Zuzu and Sultan. Though, Sultan held on to his apprehensions. I knew he would, maybe for a day or two….by the next hour he had figured out every corner in the house, where to relieve himself and that, kitchen was the only banned area in the house.

By the evening, as Kusum came back from office, the little one's eyes spoke again, stealing a smile it had me reflecting on my notion of humans having the most expressive pair of eyes…. Kusum's anger and frustration about not being prepared for another after Zuzu( our choco-lab) and Sultan( our rottie) just melted away.......

....sometime in the middle of the night, we figured out that he had made himself comfortable between Kusum and me on the bed. For the first night, I thought it was cute, off course something, which never crossed Zuzu or Sultan's minds in all these months.

The alarm was different next morning. We woke up to a sing song stretch by our two and half month old, Karwani, who had confidently replaced the bolster to take it's position on the bed, within a matter of hours.

After my customary morning walk with Zuzu and Sultan, as we came to the park infornt of our house, our brindle bundle of joy and energy joined us ....

...... within minutes he hit the turf the way Devdas would hit his glass. He was running to his heart’s content and Zuzu and Sultan at nine and seven months(of age) respectively were left trying to figure out a two and half month old hurricane that had hit them. They just couldn’t match up with him and I stood there mesmerized..... watching him glide across effortlessly from one side of the park to the other, i realised, a free spirit had stormed into my life.

I fell in love with him yet again. The third time infact, within 24 hours. Later that day, we named him Parsha, meaning ‘pure’ in Persian.
